THE GREAT CAUSE OF TODOR ALEXANDROV AND THE BULGARIAN EMIGRATION IN US AND CANADA
by Trendafil Mitev

Macedonian Patriotic Organization Todor Alexandrov is the national leader of IMRO and the Bulgarian struggle for national liberation in Macedonia, who first turned his gazed on the Bulgarian emigration in America (US. and Canada). Besides Todor Alexandov not just first paid special attention to the emigration in America. He first of all set the task, that the Bulgarians in United States and Canada must be considered as a equivalent and unique external factor in the Macedonian National-Liberation movement, identical of a meaning and of an importance to the role, that all the organizations in Macedonia, and liberated Bulgaria are playing. Therefore he formulates the idea to build strong organizational bonds between MPO and the Union Of The Macedonian Brotherhoods in Sofia. Why? What had Todor Alexandrov become aware before the others?

Firstly, he realized how numerous is the emigration in the New world and what a representative political body it could be, if it is well organized. On the second place, the leader of IMRO estimated, that the majority of the emigrants in the US is well provided for, which allow them to support financially the brotherhoods and to subsidize their own initiatives. Thirdly, Todor Alexandrov knew about the good organizational and public traditions, already created in colonies of the emigration. They were a good precondition for a fast advance under the new conditions after the WWI. In the forth place, of great significance for Todor Alexandrov was the fact, that the Macedonian-Bulgarians in America were living in highly cultural and democratically countries (US. and Canada). The existence of the wide political freedom there provided unrestricted opportunities for legal expressions in defense of the just cause in Macedonia. And not in the last place, US. is the only great power , who had made a big stand against the uncompromising punishment of the Bulgarians at the Paris peace talks in 1919. This American position needed to become tradition. And to make that possible, it was necessary to feed her up with arguments and new facts, so if eventually there was a favourable international situation she could have been repeated.

In the account of the above, Todor Alexandrov personally begin to establish the solid connections between MPO and the Union Of The Macedonian Brotherhood in Sofia. For the purpose he chose and sent the first official "attourney" of IMRO to MPO - Jordan Chkatrov. With officially signed proxy by Alexandrov, provided also with recommendations for the emigrants known by the leader of IMRO, Chkatrov arrived in New York in 1923`. For 3 years he has worked as a secretary of the Central Comitee of MPO.Thanks to his undoubtful organizational abilities and unbeaten rhetorical talant -Jordan Chkatrov plays a cruical role for helping MPO to step strong on their feet. The organization is stabilized and begins to parry the unfair attacks, addressed to the Bulgarians in Macedonia, the IMRO, and the MPO itself. Jordan Chkatrov filful briliantly the task given by Todor Alexandrov. The realization of his ideas practicly created another powerful external factor for the national-liberation movement of the Macedonian-Bulgarians.That is why the murder of Todor Alexandrov on August 31th, 1924` shook deeply the whole emigration.

News for the commited crime is immediately announced in America by agency AP. The "New York Thimes" newspaper comes out with an extensive biographical article, in which are given detailed information with positive apprasials for the personality and life-work of the Macedonian leader. The Central Comitee at MPO asks the National Cometee at The Brotherhoods in Sofia right away to send a telegraphical information about the situation.. Around September 20th, 1924` the answer is received in US. On 23rd September, 1924` The Central Cometee publishes "Memorandum # 8" prior to the death of Todor Alexandrov. This is the longest memorandum distributed ever in the history of MPO.

The document contains three main parts. In the first one The Central Comitee gives a high grade to Todor Alexandrov`s role, in the national-liberation movement among the Macedonian-Bulgarians.Alexandrov is described as a "saver" and "regenerator" of the Macedonian National-liberation movement in Vardar and Whitesea (Augean) part in Macedonia after the WWI. In the second part of the "memorandum # 8" from 24/09/1924 is given a brief valuation of Alexandrov`s life-work.The third part of the document is specially devoted to the rescued role he played, by concentrating and giving meaning of the public action, developed by the Bulgarian emigration in US. In the end of the mourning document The CC of MPO orders to the local patriotic organizatons in the Bulgarian colonies in US and Canada to hold a memorial services, mourning meetings, memorial evning meetings (vecherinki) , etc. in memory of the great leader of IMRO. Particularly to the Bulgarian emigrants from Macedonia here, says the memorandum, CC Appeal to everybody to unite stronger around the Macedonian flag and not get desperate even for a moment! The toughness and loyalty to the liberation fight are mostly needed in moments of crises and unfortunes. The Macedonian emigration in America will manage to carry out its bounded duty to the captive Fatherland, that is broken down under the yoke of unseen terror (Greeks and Serbian).

Memorandum # 8 of CC at MPO is signed by the chairman Pandil Shandev, the secretary Jordan Chkatrov, the vice-chairman Srbinov, the accounter Tashe Popchev and the counsellor of CC - Lambo Kisilinchev. That is how Bulgarian-Americans start the process to perpetuate the memory of the legendary leader of the revolutionary movement in Macedonia.
